Passes: Renewed Squeeze

In this video I show a very basic yet effective Butterfly Guard Pass, The Egg Cracker.

I really love teaching this pass to beginners because it focuses on the spatial control and good base.

The first thing that needs to be stressed in Butterfly Guard is creating distance between you and your opponent, dominating their legs by squeezing your knees and flattening out your opponent.  All of these are present in this pass!

The first thing part of this pass is making sure that you have a strong base.  Your back should be slightly slanted and you should be rotating your pelvis forward while making sure you butt is back.  This is a very odd move and seems contradictory but if you watch the video you will see what I'm talking about.

Once you have adjusted your base it is time to start making space between you and your opponent.  There are a number of ways to do this (pushing on the face or crossfacing with your forearm) but in this video we use the egg crackers.  Basically we're going to straighten out our arms and start to wedge them between my body and my opponents body.

Once you get your forearm to the inside of the chest and you flatten out your opponent you want to make sure to pin your opponents heels to their butt.  Once their heels are pinned to their butt it will be very difficult for your opponent to build any lifting power with their legs.  This is also the point that you start to force your arms into the double underhook position (or at least on one side).

Once you get into this position is important to re-emphasize the squeezing of the ankles.  Once you have a lot of pressure on the ankles you should quickly straighten one leg.  The combination of pressure due to squeezing of your knees and the straigthening of your leg will push your opponents base off to the side.  Then when you return your knee to your opponents butt you will find that you have created a great pass for yourself off to one side.

IT IS VERY IMPORTANT THAT YOU HAVE THE UNDERHOOK ON THE OPPOSITE SIDE YOU ARE PASSING (I hope the caps lock has emphasized this).

This can be a very simple and effective pass that works even against good people!
